Armando's Mexican Food is a no-frills spot in the heart of San Diego’s Palm Avenue corridor, serving straightforward, generously portioned Mexican fare with a focus on hearty burritos and classic plates. It’s the kind of place where the food often takes center stage over ambiance—expect a casual, utilitarian setting with the buzz and occasional background noise of a busy neighborhood joint open around the clock.

Regulars and newcomers alike gravitate toward Armando’s for its sizable California burritos, carne asada fries, and rolled tacos with guacamole. These dishes come loaded with well-seasoned meat that feels authentic and locally appreciated, reflecting the longstanding Mexican-American food culture of the area. The breakfast burritos here hold up as solid options, fueling early risers or late-night visitors alike, thanks to the 24-hour service.

The atmosphere is informal and a bit rugged, which matches the practical nature of the restaurant rather than aiming for polish or trendiness. You might notice a diverse mix of people—from neighborhood locals seeking a reliable meal at odd hours to folks coming from nearby nightlife or even travelers crossing the border from Tijuana. The immediate surroundings can feel a little rough, with some presence of homeless individuals nearby, but inside, the focus is mainly on filling plates rather than decor.

Parking is limited, so many visitors find street parking near the trolley station or side streets. The constant flow of people at all hours creates a lively if gritty scene that’s part of the fabric of the community here.

Best times to visit would be off-peak hours if you prefer a quieter meal, but Armando’s true character shines in its steady stream of customers around the clock, especially late at night or early morning. If you’re chasing a filling, confidently seasoned carne asada burrito or some hearty fries loaded with meat, this is a spot that delivers those reliably robust flavors without fuss.

Overall, Armando’s caters to those who want a solid, staple Mexican food experience rooted in local tradition, without any pretense. It’s ideal for hungry diners looking for generous servings and authentic street-style tastes in a straightforward, down-to-earth environment.

Been coming here for years. Always getting a burrito, it’s really good and sometimes okay. I guess depends on who’s in the kitchen. Still recommend tho. Location is kinda sketchy, a lot of homeless loitering outside but I still come here tho.

Heard about this place on TikTok but I live in North County. Finally I was around the area and I was able to get here. Also this place is 24 hours which is great. There were some people there who it looked like came from partying, probably TJ. Anyways I got a Carne Asada Quesadilla for parents and I got Carne Asada Fries. The Carne Asada Fries were one of the heaviest I've ordered compared to other Mexican spots. As for the taste, it was really good. Nice mix of the guacamole and Cotija cheese. No complaints and great food!

This little hole in the wall had one of the best burritos and steak fries I have ever had. I've tried a ton of Mexican food prior to my visit to Armando's and I have to say that this was some of the most unique flavors for Mexican food. I'm definitely going back anytime I'm back in the area. Awesome food!!!

Armando’s is one of my favorite taco shops in the world. I’ve traveled all over, and I still come back here when I visit San Diego. I will feature this place in one of my future thriller novels. I grew up in this neighborhood, and the rolled tacos plus carne asada burritos are one of the best food deals around. The portions are huge and hearty. You could literally feed four people with this carne asada burrito and 12 rolled tacos. That’s one thing about the carne asada burritos in San Diego - lots of meat. The San Diego style of carne asada burrito is unmatched in my humble opinion. The rolled tacos are an absolute feast of finely grated cheese, guacamole, and crispy, crunchy tacos. Plus, Armando’s gives you all the salsa you could possibly want, in both green and red. The salsa comes in little cups, which is absolutely perfect for dipping your rolled tacos into. That’s a definite bonus. They are next to a busy 7/11 and trolley station, so parking is a bit of a challenge. But the people are in and out relatively quickly, so you can almost always find a space. One bummer is that they started charging a credit card fee for transactions. But at the price of California food, I can’t blame them. They were probably taking a quiet hit on fees. Most people pay cash here, and that’s always the best way to go.

CA burritos were amazing. Carne Asada was seasoned very well, still juicy and tender. Great fries to meat ratio. Fries weren't used as a filler to skimp out on the meat. Parking is very very limited in the lot. Was easy enough to find street parking on the side street near the trolly station.

Super California Burrito is very big, full of carne asada, fries, cheese, guacamole, and sour cream. Super tasty and the price was right. Rolled tacos were excellent and stuffed with meat. Red and green salsas were great. The cashier was very friendly and confirmed your order up front - I appreciate that. Great job. Highly recommend Armando's.

Wow! Due to the portions, we ended up sharing Armandos breakfast burrito (10 out of 10), one huge al pastor taco (one taco the size of 3-4 Street tacos - and also delish), and 3 rolled tacos with cheese and Guacamole...cooked nice and crunchy with lots if cheese and Guacamole! Side of beans to try and also tasty! Jamaica was perfect - not too sweet. We are definitely coming back to this gem! Soooo good! And their prices are fair for the portions received. They do charge 3.99% for charging- suggest bringing cash. And no public restrooms.
